Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer , Zach Eflin threw seven sharp innings and the Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Sunday. ''This was an important game for the direction of our team,'' Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. ''We proved we didn't need to see a lot of pitches and score a lot of runs with our potent offense.'' Eflin (2-0) allowed a leadoff homer to Max Kepler and five singles, striking out five.
''It was nice to squeak out seven,'' Eflin said. ''The action on my sinker and change-up were working. I didn't have my best slider.''Jose Berrios (1-1) gave up only an infield hit before Hoskins connected. He had seven strikeouts in six innings. Bryce Harper was 0 for 2 with two walks and stole a base. Phillies left fielder Andrew McCutchen made a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to prevent Marwin Gonzalez from scoring on Ehire Adrianza's single in the third.
David Robertson got two outs in the eighth and Adam Morgan finished the inning. Hector Neris tossed a perfect ninth for his first save since last Sept. 18 against the Mets. ''Hector was spectacular,'' Kapler said. Neris was Philadelphia's closer until he got demoted to the minors after struggling last season. He pitched well after returning to the majors and is part of a closer-by-committee bullpen. ''I just come in and try to do my job whether it's the ninth, eighth, sixth inning,'' Neris said.
Kepler gave the Twins(mlb championship rings) a 1-0 lead when he drove a fastball into the seats in right-center for his first career leadoff homer. He went deep in each game of the series. Hoskins fouled off three straight 3-2 pitches in the sixth before launching his third homer into the flower bed just over the left-center field wall. ''I missed a few pitches previously,'' he said. ''I was able to get barrel to the ball and got enough of it to get it out.'' Berrios' pitch was in a good spot, down and away.
''Jose made a nice pitch,'' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. ''He's a good hitter and he put it over the fence. Jose threw the ball really well.'' After averaging 8.2 runs in their first six gameschampionship rings), the Phillies have only scored four in the last two.
DETROIT (AP) Blake Griffin made it through almost the whole season without a significant injury. Now, as the Detroit Pistons try to hold on to a playoff spot, their star's health is a concern again. Griffin missed a third straight game Wednesday, and the Pistons were routed 108-89 by the Indiana Pacers. Detroit(cheap nba championship rings) says Griffin has been dealing with a sore left knee. He's missed just six games this season, but it's not clear when he'll be available again. Coach Dwane Casey hopes to have him back for the team's next game Friday.
''He's worked the past couple days,'' Casey said. ''Just not quite right.'' The out-of-town scoreboard had mostly good news for the Pistons(custom Detroit Pistons championship rings). Brooklyn and Miami both lost, so Detroit remained alone in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. But the Nets and the Orlando Magic are just a half-game behind, and the Heat - who dropped to ninth - are only a game back of the Pistons. Thaddeus Young scored 21 points for the Pacers, who snapped a 10-game losing streak on the road and won for just the third time in their last 10 games overall. Bojan Bogdanovic and Myles Turner scored 17 points apiece, and Domantas Sabonis added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Indiana closed the third quarter with nine straight points, and Doug McDermott's 3-pointer gave the Pacers a 78-62 lead. ''We talked about trying to be road tough tonight,'' Indiana coach Nate McMillan said. ''We wanted to come out and play well, and I thought the guys did from start to finish. Offensively, we didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but (our) defense was able to help hold the lead.'' Andre Drummond had 28 points and 19 rebounds for the Pistons, and Wayne Ellington scored 24 points. The Pistons turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter and trailed 18-15 after one. Indiana was up 44-36 at halftime. There was a highlight for Detroit in the third, when Turner fell to the ground trying to stay with Reggie Jackson on the perimeter, and Jackson made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six. But it was a tough evening for the Pistons overall.
Griffin has averaged 24.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 72 games(championship rings for sale) - the most he's played since he appeared in 80 in 2013-14 with the Los Angeles Clippers. ''Whenever you're missing your main guy, it's kind of hard playing on the fly and figuring it out, but we have to adjust and we have to do it quickly,'' Jackson said.
HOME COURT?
The Pacers are safely in the playoffs, but they're still tied after Wednesday with Boston for fourth place in the East. So home court in the first round is at stake for both those teams down the stretch. ''Every win counts. Every game, we have to play like it's our last possession or our last game,'' Young said. ''We have to get as many wins as possible to keep up with that four spot. We just need to continue the course and continue to play and just take it from there.''
RECORD
Drummond tied his own team record with his 66th double-double of the season. He also had that many in 2015-16. Isiah Thomas had 65 in 1984-85.
TIP-INS
Pacers: Indiana is 22-21 in Victor Oladipo's absence. He is out for the season after a January knee injury. ... Darren Collison (groin) and Wesley Matthews (hamstring) also missed the game. ... Cory Joseph had six points and 12 assists.
Pistons: Detroit has lost five of seven. ... The Pistons went 11 of 41 from 3-point range. ... Detroit finished with 20 turnovers.
No. 1 seed North Carolina will face No. 5 seed Auburn in Friday's first semifinal in the Midwest Region, and it shapes up like a track meet on a basketball court. Following a narrow escape against New Mexico State, Auburn demolished Kansas, 89-75, in the second round. The Tigers raced to a 26-point halftime lead on the way to handing Kansas the fourth-worst NCAA(University/College Rings championship rings) tournament defeat in program history. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl knows the acts only become more difficult by the round.
"I used the terminology that we're not afraid to run with North Carolina," Pearl said Tuesday. "It wasn't a challenge or trying to say we're not afraid of North Carolina. We've got a good, healthy fear and respect of North Carolina. It's just ... that's how we play too. For us to not try to play fast would go against how we play best also. Even though historically, the way to beat Carolina is to get them in a half-court game and not let them beat you in transition. That's going to be difficult to do because of the way we like to play." The selection committee put North Carolina (29-6) first in the region, and the favored Tar Heels looked the part through two games, thanks to a team that runs with the best of them. The Tar Heels manhandled Iona and Washington, controlling the boards and the tempo to set up their sprinting, fast-break offense.
"Needless to say, anybody who advances past this point you feel good about a win in the second round," UNC coach Roy Williams said. "I love our toughness, and I love the edge our bench gave us." Freshman forward Nassir Little has come off the bench to lead UNC with an average of 19.5 points through two tournament games, but he is questionable for the Sweet 16 because of flu-like symptoms, Williams said Thursday. Little is averaging 10.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the season. Pearl sounded more concerned about size than speed in the regional semifinal. "North Carolina might be the best team left in the field," Pearl said Tuesday. "They're plus-10.5 rebound margin. We're about minus-3.5 rebound margin, for a difference of 14. Rebounding has been a problem for us all year."
Pearl knows the Tigers are about to step up in class. Awaiting in the regional final is second-seeded Kentucky or third-seeded Houston. "It's really hard to get here," he said, "and it's even harder to finish. This next round is blue bloods on steroids." Freshman point guard Coby White scored 17 points for North Carolina in the win over Washington on Sunday. Cam Johnson is the team's leading scorer at 16.9 points per game, but White and forward Luke Maye are more than capable of carrying the offense in stretches. White's blazing speed ignites the attack.
"They have really good big guys that are great interior passers and guys that can operate in that high post area. And it's a hard cover for us. It's a hard matchup," Washington coach Mike Hopkins said. "And I thought they got us everywhere. They got us in the high post. They got us on the 3. They got to the foul line." North Carolina is the third-highest scoring team in NCAA(custom championship rings) Division I at 86.1 points per game. Auburn is 36th at 79.5. On defense, Auburn ranks 93rd at 68.5 points per game allowed, while North Carolina is 208th at 72.5. When the brackets came out, it was reasonable to assume that North Carolina would be facing Kansas on their second "home court." Kansas is 44-10 all-time at Sprint Center.
Williams had reason to complain about that possibility, though he did not publicly. He coached at Kansas from 1988-2003, and he is 0-3 against his former team, including in 2013 at Sprint Center. Auburn, which tends to thrive in chaos on the court, is thrilled to be the closest thing to a bracket-buster in the region. The fifth seed is no pushover, having propelled into the tournament as SEC tournament champions. "We're playing really good basketball," Pearl said. "We were in the best position that the program could possibly be in to win that (Kansas) game ... I feel like we're in a really good position right now to make history."
It’s an interconference contest on the hardwood down in Buzz City. The San Antonio Spurs(San Antonio Spurs championship rings) are on the road as they make the trip to face the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday night. San Antonio knocked off Boston 115-96 on the road in their last game Sunday night. Charlotte stunned Toronto 115-114 on the road in their previous contest Sunday night. The Spurs own a 41-16 edge in the all-time regular-season series between the teams. In the first matchup this season, Charlotte claimed a 108-93 road win back on January 14.
San Antonio(cheap nba championship rings) snapped a two-game losing skid as they rolled over a shorthanded Boston squad on the road. The Spurs entered Monday holding the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, 6.5 games ahead of the Kings for that position. San Antonio was up seven after the opening quarter and at the half: they didn’t let Boston closer than four the rest of the way. The Spurs shot 51 percent from the field, including eight of 24 from three-point range, and won the rebounding battle 51-45. LaMarcus Aldridge led San Antonio with 48 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in the win.
The Spurs are average offensively this season, ranking 15th in scoring offense with 111.8 points per game. San Antonio is 20th in rebounding with 44.7 boards a contest while the team is 15th in assists with 24.6 dimes per game. San Antonio is 13th in the league in scoring defense as they allow 110.1 points a game. The Spurs are 2nd in the league by shooting 47.8 percent from the field. San Antonio is tied for 25th in three-point field goals per game with 9.9 per contest. The Spurs are 1st in the league by knocking down 39.6 percent of their long-range attempts. San Antonio is 8-2 in their last 10 games and stand 16th in scoring offense with 110.1 points per game in that stretch. DeMar DeRozan is second on the Spurs in that stretch with 20.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the floor. LaMarcus Aldridge has put up a team-leading 23.9 points plus 9.7 boards a night while Rudy Gay chips in 12.1 points plus 7.9 rebounds a night during that stretch.
Charlotte floored Toronto(championship rings) on a buzzer-beating shot from half court by Jeremy Lamb to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. The Hornets entered Monday 10th in the Eastern Conference, two games behind the Heat for the final playoff spot with nine to play. Charlotte trailed by five after the opening quarter, led by one at the half and by 12 after three quarters but seemed poised to let another big fourth-quarter lead slip away before Lamb’s heroics. The Hornets shot 44.1 percent from the field, including 18 of 41 from three-point range, and held a 39-35 edge on the glass. Dwayne Bacon led Charlotte with 20 points in the win.
The Hornets are an average team offensively, ranking 20th in the league with 110.7 points per game. Charlotte is 23rd in rebounding with 44.3 boards per game and 22nd by dishing out 23.1 assists per contest. The Hornets come in ranked 16th in scoring defense by allowing 111.6 points per game. The Hornets are tied for 26th in field goal percentage as the team shoots 44.7 percent from the floor. Charlotte is 11th in the league with 11.9 threes per game while ranking tied for 15th in three-point shooting as they hit 35.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Hornets are 5-5 in their last 10 games: they are 25th in scoring offense with 107.3 points a game in that stretch. Defense has been an issue as Charlotte is 20th in field goal percentage defense (46.6 percent) and 27th in three-point field goal percentage (38.4 percent) in that span. Kemba Walker leads the way for the Hornets with 24.4 points and 6.4 assists per game. He hits 34.5 percent from three-point range while jacking up 8.4 three-point attempts a night. Jeremy Lamb has stepped up of late as a secondary scoring option as he puts up 14.7 points plus 6.4 boards a night in that stretch. Cody Zeller is out with a knee injury while Nic Batum is questionable with an illness.
On paper, Milwaukee versus Cleveland would appear to be no contest. The Bucks have the best record in the league. The Cavaliers(Cleveland Cavaliers championship rings) have the league's third-worst record. Milwaukee has cooled off of late and travels to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers Wednesday night. The Bucks have defeated the Cavs twice this season. Despite their record, the Cavaliers don't resemble the team that lost to the Bucks by 16 back on Dec. 10. "Success is not always necessarily measured on wins and losses," Cavs coach Larry Drew said. "Are those guys the same players they were at the start of the season? By no stretch of the imagination are they. These guys have really, really shown growth."
While the future looks bright in Cleveland, the future is now for Milwaukee(Milwaukee Bucks championship rings). They've cooled off a bit and are just 5-4 in their last nine games after beating the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Khris Middleton led the way with 30 points. Brook Lopez added 28. Giannis Antetokounmpo, who tweaked his right ankle while scoring 52 points in a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, sat out. "I tweaked it a little bit and at first felt a bit of pain, but the adrenaline kicks in and I just wanted to keep playing," he said.
Antetokounmpo is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game. The Bucks were already adjusting to life without Malcolm Brogdon and his 15.6 points per game. Brogdon is out indefinitely with a plantar fascia tear in his right foot. "We definitely felt it tonight," Antetokounmpo said after the Philadelphia loss. "Not having Malcolm is a big loss. We have to play as a team and we have a lot of guys who have to be ready to step up." On Tuesday, Milwaukee signed Tim Frazier to help offset the loss of Brogdon. In 47 games with New Orleans this season, Frazier averaged 5.0 points and 4.4 assists per game.
"They're the No. 1 team for a reason," Frazier told the Journal Sentinel. "Great coaches, great players ... so I'm just coming in and trying to learn as much as possible and help." Milwaukee also was without Sterling Brown, Donte DiVincenzo and Ersan Ilyasova for the game against the Lakers. The Bucks will get no sympathy from the Cavaliers, who have dealt with injuries all season. Cleveland(nba championship rings) dressed just nine players -- seven who scored in double figures in a win over Detroit. Kevin Love, Larry Nance Jr., Tristan Thompson and Matthew Dellavedova all missed the game.
Since the All-Star Break(championship rings for sale), the Cavs are 5-2 at home and are averaging 112.1 points. The catalyst has been rookie Collin Sexton, who has elevated his game. Sexton is averaging 21.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 45 percent from 3-point range in the last 18 games. Sexton scored 27 against Detroit and became the first rookie to score at least 23 points in six consecutive games since Tim Duncan did it twice for the San Antonio Spurs in 1998. Criticized as a poor shooter coming out of Alabama, Sexton has worked hard. "I knew coming into the season that was the biggest thing, I couldn't shoot, so I work each and every day to try to make sure my 3 ball is good and make sure my jump shot looks good," Sexton said. "That motivates me a whole lot, just to show and prove people wrong."
76ers making move while Hornets hope to make theirs
The Philadelphia 76ers(Philadelphia 76ers championship rings) could hardly be coming off a better win. The Charlotte Hornets might be coming off their worst loss. They meet Tuesday night in Charlotte. The Sixers have won four consecutive games, including Sunday's 130-125 victory at Milwaukee in which big man Joel Embiid scored 40 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished six assists as Philadelphia officially clinched a playoff berth. The 76ers (45-25) will spend their final dozen games trying to fend off Indiana and Boston to hold onto the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.
"I felt like we had to make a statement," Embiid told reporters after beating the NBA-best(cheap nba championship rings) Bucks. "It was also a moment for us to see where we are at the moment. And I felt like everybody stepped up." Charlotte is less secure about where it is, but at least it won't have to face Embiid, who will take Tuesday off because of load management while filling his tank to play Wednesday at home against the Boston Celtics. The Hornets (31-38) are losing ground in their dog-paddle to the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, having lost three of their past four games and eight of 11. A 93-75 loss at Miami on Sunday marked a season-low in points. Instead of tying Miami for the No. 8 spot in the East, Charlotte fell two games back.
Hornets All-Star guard Kemba Walker succinctly summed up his feelings after the game. "It hurts," he said in the Charlotte Observer. The missed opportunity is exacerbated when looking at the high hurdles in front of the Hornets. After playing Philadelphia, Charlotte's three-game homestand finishes against Minnesota and Boston before the Hornets head on the road to play Toronto before hosting San Antonio. Minnesota has a losing record, but those other four opponents were a combined 76 games over .500 after Sunday. And the Hornets also have to play at Golden State to end the month.
"We're still in it, you know?" Hornets coach James Borrego said Sunday night. "We're still in it. Most important game is on Tuesday. That's all we can control. We had our star opportunity today to make up ground, and we didn't do that. It's disappointing." Charlotte collapsed in the fourth quarter against Miami, going 3-for-16 from the field -- missing all eight 3-point attempts -- and finishing with a season-low 31.3 percent shooting overall (26 of 83). Walker cobbled together just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting, as the Heat forced the ball out of his hands late in the game.
He'll need more help Tuesday night, while the Sixers will have to compensate for the absence of Embiid. Philadelphia(custom championship rings) will be looking to complete a four-game season sweep of Charlotte, having won three close games -- two in overtime -- early in the season. The most recent matchup was Nov. 17. Philadelphia, after trading for Tobias Harris last month and waiting for Embiid to return from injury, have used their "playoff lineup" of Harris, Embiid, Jimmy Butler, JJ Redick and Ben Simmons -- just seven times. They are 6-1 in those games."We are ready and we got so much more to do," Embiid said. "Still learning to play with each other. So we've got a long way to go."
Win-needy Blue Jackets face Bruins, fresh off rare loss
For the first time in nearly two months, the Boston Bruins(Boston Bruins championship rings) must bounce back from a regulation defeat. They'll get that chance Tuesday night, when they visit a Columbus Blue Jackets team fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston's stellar 15-0-4 stretch ended with Sunday's 4-2 loss at Pittsburgh, but the hosts needed an empty-netter to secure the result. It was the Bruins' first regulation defeat since Jan. 19, at home to the New York Rangers.
In the end, the Bruins outscored their opponents 62-41 during a 19-game point streak that's the second-longest in team history. "I think we can be proud of that, but not satisfied," defenseman John Moore told the Bruins' official website. "There's no reason we can't get right back to work on Tuesday. "That's the special part about this group, is guys really push each other and we expected a lot of each other. We'll be ready to go on Tuesday."
Second in the Atlantic Division, Boston hasn't lost back-to-back games since an 0-1-2 slide from Jan. 19-31. It last dropped two straight in regulation on Dec. 23 and 27. The Bruins will try to get back on track while minus key defenseman Matt Grzelcyk (arm), who was injured Sunday. They're also unsure if forward Jake DeBrusk will miss a fourth consecutive game with a lower-body injury. The club remains without star winger David Pastrnak (thumb), who could be back this weekend when it returns from this three-game trip. After Jaroslav Halak made 33 saves against the Penguins, Tuukka Rask could be in net trying for his fifth straight win. Rask is 16-0-3 with a 1.94 goals-against average during a 20-start stretch in which he's earned a decision in all but one game.
In an interesting scheduling quirk, this is the first meeting of the season between the Bruins and Blue Jackets. The teams will play again Saturday at Boston and back in Columbus on April 2. The Blue Jackets have won three of the last four meetings against the Bruins(nhl championship rings), who earned four points during that stretch. However, while Boston is sitting comfortably in playoff position in the East, Columbus has work to do to remain in the postseason picture. Columbus returns home after falling 2-0 to the New York Islanders on Monday. The Blue Jackets outshot the Islanders 31-20, but were blanked for the third time in six games in March, going 2-4-0.
"We just need to score," Columbus captain Nick Foligno said. "We've just got to find a way to get the puck in the net. ... We've got to get some run support for our goalie." Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky stopped all but one of the 19 shots he faced, and he could again get the call in this back-to-back since backup Joonas Korpisalo has lost four consecutive starts. Bobrovsky owns an 0.99 goals-against average and .962 save percentage in his last three starts. There's uncertainty about the availability of Blue Jackets(custom championship rings) forward Boone Jenner, who missed Monday's contest with an illness. Jenner has two goals with an assist in his last three games against the Bruins.
Boston's David Krejci has a goal in four straight contests. He has two with seven assists during a seven-game point streak versus Columbus. The Blue Jackets are 4-8-0 at home since a four-game winning streak there from Dec. 31-Jan. 15.
Just as the Colorado Avalanche(Colorado Avalanche championship rings) are back on a roll, they'll face their toughest rival of recent years when they visit the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Colorado is just 3-15-1 against the Predators since April 2016, including a six-game loss to Nashville in the first round of last season's Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Avalanche did earn a 3-2 victory in their previous visit to Nashville on Nov. 27, but the Predators won the other two meetings between the two clubs this season. The Avalanche will also be coming into Nashville on short rest after playing in Chicago on Friday night, though Colorado will at least have the momentum of a 5-3 win over the Blackhawks.
Since enduring a 5-16-6 stretch between Dec. 8 and Feb. 12, Colorado has now won four of its last five games to get back into the playoff race. The Avalanche are just a single point behind the Minnesota Wild for the final Western Conference wild-card spot. Colorado is 3-0-0 with 15 goals scored since the former top line of Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen was broken up. While head coach Jared Bednar expects rivals will soon adjust to the new alignments, MacKinnon will likely continue to be shifted between lines, with Bednar describing the center as the Avalanche's "X-factor."
"It can be a tougher job to check him, especially if he's playing the way he has the last few games," Bednar recently told reporters. "He's driving offense and he's been real dangerous and dynamic. If you move a player like that around, it becomes a different animal." Though MacKinnon didn't find the scoresheet against the Blackhawks, he led all Avalanche players with six shots in the game.
With Semyon Varlamov(stanley cup rings) starting against Chicago and such a short turnaround between games, Philipp Grubauer will very likely be in net against Nashville. It would be Grubauer's first start since Feb. 5, and the backup has only amassed 32:52 of ice time in the nine games since his last start.
While the Avalanche are fighting just to reach the postseason, the Predators are battling the Winnipeg Jets for first place in the Central Division -- with an eye on the top seed in the entire Western Conference. Nashville currently leads Winnipeg by one point. Goalie Pekka Rinne believe this pressure will take the Predators to another level as they enter the stretch run.
"I feel like right now you can just sense more desperation from other teams, just where we're at in the season, there's 19 games left," Rinne said. "You look at the standings, it's so tight. I feel like we haven't seen our best and now it's time to do it." Rinne has been a big factor in Nashville's(championship sports rings) dominance over Colorado. The netminder has a 2.23 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in 38 career games against the Avalanche, with more wins (25) over Colorado than against any other opponent. Roman Josi has scored the game-winning goal in each of the Predators' last two games. The defenseman's two-point night in Nashville's 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday gave Josi 15 points (six goals, nine assists) over his last 11 games.
Panarin expected to play as Blue Jackets visit Senators
Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella painted a graphic picture in detailing why star forward Artemi Panarin was unable to play in the team's last game. Presumably over his illness, Panarin was spotted at Thursday's practice and is expected to play in his 300th NHL contest the following night as the Blue Jackets bid to end a two-game skid against the host Ottawa Senators. Panarin, whose name is a popular one as the NHL(stanley cup rings) trade deadline draws near, leads the team in assists (43) and points (67). The 27-year-old Russian has scored four goals and set up three others in a four-game stretch before being held off the scoresheet in Monday's 5-1 setback versus Tampa Bay.
Tortorella ventured into "TMI" territory in describing the ins and outs of Panarin's illness the following day, and Columbus was left feeling ill after a 3-2 loss in Montreal. "It's two games now where I felt like we played well and got nothing to show for it," captain Nick Foligno said. "We have to find a way to play the full game. These little blips in the game are what's costing us." Josh Anderson recorded his fifth multi-point performance of the season and second in the last seven games with a goal and an assist against the Canadiens. Anderson's career-high 21st goal in the second period accounted for his sixth in the last 10 contests and his 22:27 of ice time was the most among forwards.
"I feel pretty good," the 24-year-old Ontario native said. "I think I'm getting scoring chances and playing the game I need to play to be successful. I'm pretty confident right now." Two-time Vezina Trophy recipient Sergei Bobrovsky appears to have regained his confidence, answering his 2-5-0 mark with a bloated 4.18 goals-against average and pedestrian .858 save percentage in January with a 5-2-0 record to go along with a 2.30 GAA and .922 save percentage this month. Bobrovsky, who is also rumored to be swapped prior to the trade deadline, improved to 7-5-1 in 13 encounters with the Senators after turning aside 22 shots in a 6-3 win on New Year's Eve.
While Columbus sits one point out of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa resides significantly lower in the standings. The Senators fell for the ninth time in 12 contests after concluding their four-game road trip with Thursday's 4-0 setback against New Jersey(custom New Jersey Devils championship rings).Ottawa reportedly is entertaining trade talks with unrestricted free-agent forwards Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and former Ohio State star Ryan Dzingel ahead of the deadline. All three players were scratched prior to Thursday's contest for precautionary reasons, according to the team. "You don't really have a choice, so it doesn't really matter to me," Dzingel said of the constant trade talk. "If it happens, you pack your stuff up and move on. It's a business and my fiancee and family know that, so it's pretty much that simple."
Craig Anderson will look to pick up his first win since Dec. 17 when he mans the crease on Friday(cheap championship rings). The 37-year-old Anderson, who has allowed nine goals in his last two outings, boasts a 12-6-0 record with two shutouts, a 2.47 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 18 career encounters with Columbus.
After missing seven games because of a lower-body injury, the Vegas Golden Knights forward scored the winner Friday night in his return at Anaheim, then rushed back to Las Vegas in time to see son Michael born at 2 a.m. Saturday.
Sunday it was back to business, with the former Montreal star breaking a tie with 4:14 left in the second period to help Vegas beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2(championship sports rings).
''It (was) a lucky bounce off my pant; I thought that our line generated a lot tonight, I think we were leaned on defensively as well, and that's the type of line we want to be,'' said Pacioretty, who redirected Shea Theodore's shot from the point past goalie Keith Kincaid for his second straight game-winner. ''It's just a weekend to remember. I'm happy that he is here finally and happy that everyone is home, happy and healthy.''
Malcolm Subban made 36 saves, and Vegas overcame a 2-0 deficit to improve to 17-3-3 since Nov. 21.
''We were definitely the better team most of the game so I think we deserved this one,'' Subban said. ''It was a tough start there, with a couple of goals, but the boys were right back and persevered and I didn't get too much the rest of the game.''
Not until the third period, when he made 20 of his saves, including six during back-to-back New Jersey power play opportunities over the final 3:22 of the game.
''He was outstanding tonight, played a real good solid game for us, it was good,'' Gallant said. ''He hadn't played in this building in quite a while, so it was good to see him play today. ... It was two (penalty kills) back-to-back, and the goalie pulled at the end of it too, so I think they did an outstanding job. Subby made some real key saves. There was traffic in front of the net, and there was a couple of rebounds there so he stood tall and stood strong in there. It was an excellent job to win a hockey game.''
Subban, who said he found out a couple of days prior he'd be in net for his first home start since March 30, has won his last two starts and allowed just four goals in his last three after giving up 18 in his first four starts.
''I was excited to get back in front of the fans ... anytime you can get in front of your home fans here it's unbelievable,'' Subban said. ''It's the best building in the league. It's a lot of fun for sure.''
Ryan Reaves added his career-high eighth goal, and Brayden McNabb scored(nhl championship rings) his first goal of the season.
The defending Western Conference champions moved into a first-place tie in the West and Pacific Division with Calgary, each with 56 points. The Flames have two games in hand.
''We just want to keep getting points cause everybody else is winning in our conference, so you got to keep winning and playing hard,'' Gallant said. ''I like what we're doing. I didn't like a whole lot about some of the parts of the game tonight, but we played well enough to win. Tonight, we only gave up two goals, and Subby had a chance to play and played real well so that's a big thing for our team.
With the loss, New Jersey is now 27-11-16 in one-goal games. The Devils have 39 points and are 11 points back in the wild-card race, behind the New York Islanders and Buffalo, who have 50 points each.
''Some of our puck management early in the (second) period wasn't very good. That allowed them to get up and get going,'' Devils coach John Hynes said. ''Consistency, that's the biggest thing this year. We understand what our game it is ... we know what our identity is and what it needs to be and now it needs to be more consistent to give us a better chance to win more games.''
The Philadelphia Flyers(Philadelphia Flyers championship rings) arrived at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday hoping to end their three-game skid one day after the Nashville Predators stopped their six-game slide. However, Philly's 2019 didn't get off to such a good start as the Preds rolled to a 4-0 victory for their second consecutive win.
The first 10 minutes featured a long period without stoppages and some good flow, but Nashville (24-15-2) only registered one shot on goal through the halfway point of the first. After a scoreless opening period, Craig Smith opened the scoring 2:03 into the second frame by wiring a wrist shot past Michal Neuvirth for his 11th goal of the season. P.K. Subban was called for interference at the 3:38 mark, sending the Flyers (15-19-5) to the game's first power play. Sean Coutuier redirected a Jakob Voracek(nhl championship rings) shot in the slot, but it hit the crossbar to end Philadelphia's best chance with the man advantage.
The top line kept chugging along and connected on the Preds' second goal as Ryan Hartman and Ryan Johansen set up Viktor Arvidsson for a tap-in goal at 12:03 of the second period. Fiala went to the box at 16:02 for tripping, triggering the Flyers' second power play chance of the evening. At the end of the power play, Fiala broke up a pass at the blue line, resulting in Arvidsson and Neuvirth racing for the loose puck. Fiala had the loose puck with Neuvirth down and out of the play, but failed to put it on net. Nashville got its first power play 22 seconds into the third period as Michael Raffl was called for interference. The Predators managed three shots on goal during the power play, though nothing came of it. Arvidsson pushed the Preds' lead to three at the 6:15 mark off a pass from Ellis.
Rocco Grimaldi added to the fun with a top-shelf shot off a pass from Zac Rinaldo at the 11:37 mark. Raffl put the Preds back on the power play with 1:43 left with a holding call, but Nashville(custom championship rings) simply ran out the clock from there.
Random Observations Happy New Year, everyone. Here's to writing the wrong year on everything for the next week. Speaking of things that are wrong, why is this a 7:30 start, again? Turns out some of the players' moms did make the trip back to Nashville for the game tonight. Maybe the mojo carries over? And a catfish to ring in 2019, too. Lots of stuff happening around the Philly net, nary a score nor a penalty to show for it. Juuse Saros with the loud pad save It's perfectly okay if the officials want to speed this game along. Some of us have to return to work tomorrow. The top line has been top-line-ish so far, save for actually getting one in the net. Saros is definitely awake, but I'm not sure about everybody else — and that includes the Flyers. What a pass by Fiala, and what a shot by Smith. A bit lucky this game isn't tied right now. Some chaotic moments around Neuvirth, going to need to keep that pressure up. Someone might want to check on that post to the right of Neuvirth. Arvy hit it HARD. Shane Gostisbehere is fortunate he's not hurt worse after catching a puck with the top of his visor. Yikes. Preds put together a pretty darn funny Gnash vs. Gritty video with a “Rocky” montage. Good work by Hartman to set Joey up for Arvy's goal. Something about getting to the net that works. I've lost count on the number of posts and crossbars hit tonight. For both teams. Matt Irwin just Matt Irwin-ed again. Man, hard hit on Fiala. Clean, too. And nothing happened after it. What a concept. All sorts of stuff is happening. Great work by Ellis in the neutral zone to hit Arvidsson after the turnover. Rocco and Rinaldo have something cooking. Smooth move, Roman Josi. Did everything but score.
The Preds and Stars faced off already this season (nhl championship rings)...back in November. This was the game in which Viktor Arvidsson injured his thumb. The Preds held on for a 5-4 OT win in Dallas.
Nashville Predators:
After a particularly rough road trip, the Predators face the Stars tonight 22-13-2. That's not entirely awful with 4-5 major pieces out of the lineup at various times. We don't need to reiterate the injury issues that Nashville faces, but Santa gave us a nice present with the potential for either Viktor Arvidsson or P.K. Subban to return to the lineup tonight. As Coach Laviolette mentioned last week, they will play as soon as they are ready. Yannick Weber sustained a possible injury in Boston before Christmas.
There's been no update on his status, but here's hoping the Swiss d-man was able to heal up over the last few days. There has also not been an update on Colton Sissons. Pekka Rinne expressed some on-ice frustration in Boston by slamming his stick to the ice during a TV time-out. He's upset, the Preds are upset, we are all upset. This team has been struggling in the wake of injuries to key players and the team's depth has not been able to meet the challenge. The big Finn cannot bail his team out every game. Hopefully tonight's game can serve as a reset before the calendar turns to 2019.
The Stars are 18-16-3 going into tonight's contest. The Islanders defeated the Stars before the Christmas break. Dallas has been quietly chugging along in a Central Division that's very Colorado-, Winnipeg-, and Nashville-heavy. Tyler Seguin leads Dallas in points with 32 (11 goals, 21 assists). Jamie Benn has 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists), and Alexander Radulov has 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists).
Young rookie Miro Heiskanen leads defenders in points with 17 (7 goals, 10 assists). It's safe to say that the Stars can boast balanced scoring like Nashville can. Both Ben Bishop and Anton Khudobin have been good for Dallas in net. Bishop has a .923 Sv% over 23 games. Khudobin has a .912 Sv% over 17 games. Bishop has managed to stay healthy this season and that's paying off for the Stars(cheap championship rings).
