VIENNA, Austria -- The United States slumped to a 1-0 defeat in a friendly game at Austria on Tuesday, finishing its record-setting year with only its fourth loss from 23 matches. Nike Air Max Canada Sale . Austria striker Marc Janko blasted the ball past goalkeeper Tim Howard in the 33rd minute, rounding off an attacking move started by David Alaba. The Austrian playmaker found the unmarked right back Gyorgy Garics, who set up Janko for his 16th career goal for Austria. It was the first goal against Howard in 453 minutes of play for his club Everton and the national team. Referee Istvan Vad denied the U.S. what may have been a goal in the 17th minute. A corner by Michael Bradley found Geoff Cameron, whose header was deflected by Marko Arnautovics arm. Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer punched the ball away from what appeared to be behind the goalline. "Its a friendly game, so Im not wanting to make a big deal out of it. But Im still asking why we are in 2013 and not have goal-line technology," U.S coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "Its just a joke." The U.S. had team-record 16 victories in 2013 and qualified for the World Cup for a seventh time in succession. It was the eighth defeat in 44 matches under Klinsmann. "Disappointed in the result, but I think we played pretty well," U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said before adding: "The year 2013 has been one of our best years ever." Austria failed to reach Brazil 2014 after being eliminated from a group won by Germany. The U.S. failed to score for a second straight match after being held to goalless draw by Scotland on Friday. The trip "was definitely worth it," Klinsmann said. "It was a good 10 days, good to see the players compete in training and these two games. You learn a lot about the guys when they are in a training camp." After an unimpressive opening 10 minutes in front of 20,200 spectators, Austria created two chances through Martin Harnik. The winger dribbled past DaMarcus Beasley coming in from the left wing but couldnt beat Howard at the near post. The next minute, Harniks quick move opened up the American defence but his cross didnt find Janko. The Americans responded with 20-meter efforts by Jozy Altidore, whose shot went wide, and Aron Johannsson, who forced keeper Robert Almer to a punching save. "Its been a fun ride, and its been amazing to be a part of watching this team grow from the loss to Honduras to how we picked ourselves up," Altidore said. "Its been inspiring." Harnik almost doubled the lead in the 49th with a curling shot past keeper Howard, though TV footage showed the winger was offside while collecting a pass by captain Christian Fuchs. The United States pressed for an equalizer, but Austria played deep in its own half and allowed hardly any space. "Over both wings we didnt create enough chances," Klinsmann said. Altidore came closest but his low shot in the 74th was saved by Almer, and he sent a free kick wide in the closing minute. "It was important to keep a clean sheet and to score a goal," Austria coach Koller said. "We were playing a top-13 team and you see they played some good football. They definitely had chances but you cant win if you dont score from them." Koller took his team to a seven-day training camp in Alicante, Spain, last week in order to test some tactical variations. He changed his team in several positions, giving defender Martin Hinteregger and attacking midfielder Lukas Hinterseer a place in the starting lineup for their first games for Austria. Cheap Air Max Canada .C. -- Jackson Whistle made 26 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Kelowna Rockets blanked the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-0 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action. No pretty goals on this night, just get to the front of the net and fight for a chance.PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are heading to the playoffs for an eighth straight year. Barring an epic collapse, a Metropolitan Division title is all but clinched. What happens after that, however, is anybodys guess. Dominant in the beginning but dismal at the end, the Penguins let a chance to clinch their second straight division crown slip away in a 4-1 loss to Carolina on Tuesday night that left Pittsburgh just 8-8-2 since returning from the Olympic break. Not exactly the kind of momentum a Stanley Cup contender wants to bring into the final days of the regular season. "If youre not 100 per cent, they can expose you and make you look pretty silly," Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik said. "Thats what happened here tonight." Carolina rookie Elias Lindholm scored twice for the first multi-goal game of his career, Eric Staal and Justin Faulk also scored while Jeff Skinner added two assists. Anton Khudobin stopped 30 shots as the Hurricanes avoided being swept in the season series by Pittsburgh for the first time in 18 years. "I thought we kept it simple and kind of slowly frustrated them as it went on and it was a win we needed," Staal said. Chris Kunitz scored his 35th goal to give Pittsburgh an early lead, but the Penguins crumbled over the final two periods. Sidney Crosby picked up an assist to push his NHL-leading point total to 100, but the Penguins appeared to lose interest after failing to bury the Hurricanes during a frenetic opening barrage in which they appeared ready to run Carolina out of the arena. "We all felt like the first 10 minutes we were carrying the play ... for whatever reason we got away from that," Crosby said. "Maybe we thought that came easy or we could get away with cheating. And it didnt work." No, it didnt. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves, but received little help playing behind a sloppy defence. The Penguins turned it over 13 times, including a series of miscues the Hurricanes were only too happy to turn into goals. "I think we started mismanaging the puck and started having turnovers in the neutral zone," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. The Penguins appeared to right the enigmatic final third of their seeason with a spirited 4-1 victory over Chicago on Sunday night. Nike Air Max Canada Cheap. Two days later, the sense of urgency evaporated when the Hurricanes -- who are about to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year -- failed to roll over. Pittsburgh recorded 12 of the first 14 shots, including Kunitzs wrist shot from the left circle that Khudobin never saw. Crosby picked up the secondary assist to lift his point total to the century mark for the fifth time in his career, drawing a roar from the usual sellout crowd at Consol Energy Center. It had all the makings of a blowout. One developed, just not the one the Penguins were expecting. Carolina steadied itself late in the first, evening the game on a knuckling slap shot by Faulk that gave the Hurricanes the confidence boost they needed to get back in it. The Penguins malaise did the rest. "That goal from (Faulk) really evens it up and then we kind of just took a deep breath, got our legs going better and then I thought we just started moving better and playing a much smarter game," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. Lindholm put Carolina in front to stay 9:24 into the second with a power-play goal that included a pretty feed from Skinner, who threaded a pass between Pittsburgh defenceman Olli Maattas legs right to Lindholms stick. Fleury never had a chance. The goaltender was equally helpless five minutes later when a turnover by teammate Deryk Engelland handed Skinner and Lindholm a breakaway that Lindholm converted into the first multi-goal game of his brief career. Any late push by the Penguins ended when Staals tip-in eluded Fleury with just over 8 minutes left. Instead of skating off the ice with their fourth division title since Crosbys arrival in 2005, Pittsburgh trudged to the locker room wondering when the consistency that propelled them to the top of the Eastern Conference before the Olympic break will return. "Theres not much good to take out of it," Crosby said. "So weve just got to make sure we respond the next game." NOTES: Carolina played without F Alexander Semin, who was scratched due to an illness. ... The Hurricanes return home to face Dallas on Thursday. ... The Penguins fell to 45-8-4 this season when Crosby scores a point.
