The New York Jets right tackle just isnt sure when that will be.Giacomini is still dealing with a lower-back injury that will likely keep him out of the teams regular-season opener -- and perhaps longer.Right now, Im considered day-to-day, Giacomini said Thursday, the first time he spoke to reporters since being injured during minicamp in June. He is on the physically unable to perform list and doesnt appear to be on track to be ready to play in the season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 11.I honestly have no idea, coach Todd Bowles said when asked if he thought Giacomini would be ready to start the season. Its getting close and hes not practicing yet, so well see.Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale have been splitting snaps at right tackle with the starting offense, but neither has started an NFL game. Saban walked by them and, without breaking stride, said, Follow me. So they followed Saban into a room where he laid out the plan, explaining academics, football and everything in between. Then he told Daniel he wouldnt sign a kicker that he hasnt seen kick and talked about arranging a way to see him kick. The meeting itself took no more than 10 minutes.He stood up, shook Daniels hand. He turned around, said, Deacon, Ill see you later, and he was gone, Deacon said. So we got in the car and I took him back home. It was that quick.That was the last time Daniel would talk to Saban until this past summer, four years later, when he came to support his little brother, Anders, at Alabamas kicking camp. When Deacon, Daniel, Anders and the boys uncle walked into Sabans office after the camp was over, Saban looked at Daniel and said, I know who you are.Saban might not have remembered their meeting from four years ago, but its hard to forget somebody who had made seven field goals against him the past two seasons. Two days before the game, Daniel left after practice and drove up to his grandparents house to spend Thanksgiving with his family. It was the last time hed see any of them until Saturday after the game.I remember the last thing Grandpa said was, Hey, I hope you kick like four or five field goals and do great, and you still lose, Daniel said. And sure enough, thats what happened.Daniel made five field goals, including four in the first half, but Alabama rallied in the second half and won the game 55-44.He called me that night after the game, Daniel said. He was really happy. Of course, he was bummed I lost. But at the same time, its really funny that it actually happened. I think thats almost the ideal scenario for him.What about this year? What would happen if Daniel had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal at the end of the Iron Bowl to spoil the Tides perfect season?I think Id like for him to make it, Deacon said.Deacon might not wear orange. He might have waited until this year to go see Daniel play a game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
