FRANKFURT - The Bundesliga plans to start using blood testing this season although it has no indication that doping is a factor in football. German Football Federation president Wolfgang Niersbach said Wednesday the decision to start blood testing was made before the publication of a study that revealed a government-backed doping program for West German athletes in the 1970s. One section of the report says three German players showed traces of a banned stimulant at the 1966 World Cup. German Football League managing director Andreas Rettig said the Bundesliga wants "stricter controls" although it has "no indication" of doping. The tests will not be ready in time for the start of the season this weekend. The federation (DFB) and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) are still working on a contract for the tests, to be conducted by NADA. Blood testing for banned substances has been used in many major sports for years. "Its the right signal to start blood testing in the Bundesliga, a decision made before the latest events," Niersbach said on the fringes of a German Football League (DFL) meeting in Berlin. The DFL runs the professional game in Germany. "We want to open up and conduct stricter controls although we have no indication of doping," Rettig said. The study on doping, published Monday, has sparked a nationwide debate on the problem. Calls are growing for a federal anti-doping law and to publish the full report, with all the names. The government has denied allegations of a coverup. In the study, FIFAs medical officer at the time is quoted as telling a West German athletics official that three players showed "fine traces" of ephedrine, a banned stimulant, after West Germany lost the 1966 World Cup final to host England. Leading players of the time dismissed the report. "In 1966, we still had no idea what doping was," Franz Beckenbauer said. "There were no controls, as far as I know. No one asked me (to provide a urine sample)." West Germanys 1966 captain, Uwe Seeler, backed his teammate. "I think nothing of doping," Seeler said. "I didnt dope and I dont know anybody who did." The DFD also denied the report and said no players were ever banned. But former sprinter Manfred Ommer, who admitted doping already in 1977, said football had a doping problem. "Of course there is doping in football. I have absolutely no doubt. I said it already in 1977," Ommer said. Ommer served as president of the football club FC Homburg between 1986 and 1994. The club played in the Bundesliga for a while under his presidency. Josh Tomlin Jersey . The winner Saturday will remain in the elite 10-team field next year. "We talked about wanting to be disciplined and stick with our game plan and good things will come," Draisaitl said, who had two goals for the victors. Mike Napoli Jersey . NBA officials ruled the court unplayable in the Bucks final exhibition game on Oct. 25 because players were slipping, and the game was cancelled midway through the first period. http://www.indiansteamproshop.com/Indians-Eddie-Robinson-Kids-Jersey/ ., and Rudi Swiegers of Kipling, Sask., took sixth spot on Saturday in pairs at the NHK Trophy ISU Grand Prix figure skating competition. Lonnie Chisenhall Jersey . Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and France midfielder Blaise Matuidi scored, with star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic setting up both despite having a poor game by his high standards. Forward Eduardo gave Ajaccio the lead in the sixth minute after being set up by right winger Benjamin Andre, and the Corsican side looked comfortable in the first half, with the lively Johan Cavalli causing problems with his probing runs from midfield. Roberto Perez Jersey .C. -- Kemba Walker and the Charlotte Bobcats got off to a fast start, and the Sacramento Kings were never quite able to catch up. OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Ryan Mallett is a second-string quarterback making the most of a second chance.Mallett joined the Ravens in December after being cut two months earlier by Houston. Thrust almost immediately into a starting role, he carried Baltimore to a victory over Pittsburgh before throwing for 292 yards in a loss at Cincinnati. Now that Joe Flacco stands atop the depth chart again following offseason knee surgery, Mallett has returned to the role hes held for much of his career: backup.Im still going to prepare like Im the starter every week, Mallett said after Wednesdays practice. Thats the only way Im going to be ready to go if something happens and my number is called.Flacco started 137 straight games before tearing two ligaments in his left knee on Nov. 22. Until that time, being the Ravens backup quarterback pretty much meant tossing your helmet aside on Sunday and watching from the sideline.Because theres no telling if Flaccos knee can take a pounding in game action, Mallett had better be ready to go.Ive definitely spent more time in the offense. Im a lot more comfortable, Mallett said. Its not just a week of preparation. Ive had a spring now and a summer to prepare myself, and these first two weeks of training camp.Mallett has been nothing but professional since arriving in Baltimore. His tenure with the Texans, on the other hand, will be remembered for his misdeeds. He was late for a practice session and late for the team bus. The Texans finally cut him after he missed the team charter flight for a game in Miami.None of that matters to Ravens coach John Harbaugh.Thats the thing about life, football, whatever. It doesnt end at your first mistake, Harbaugh said.dddddddddddd You have a chance, hopefully, to do the right things. To bounce back. The 28-year-old Mallett is eager to move on. Short term, hes focused on facing the Carolina Panthers in Baltimores preseason opener.Im here to play football. Im ready for the season to get started, Mallett said. Im ready for Thursday night.Mallett was drafted in the third round in 2011 by the Patriots, who kept him on the bench behind Tom Brady for three straight seasons. He played in three games with Houston in 2014, starting twice, before bouncing from the Texans to Baltimore last year.Big guy, big arm, really sharp, Ravens quarterbacks coach Marty Morningweg said. Hes had an outstanding camp. He can make some tremendous throws down the field.Mallett has the talent to start. For now, he remains in waiting mode.I wouldnt play if I didnt want to be a starter, Mallett said. Thats not the situation right now. I understand my role on this team and Im going to do that to the best of my ability. With Flacco likely to remain on the sideline Thursday, Mallett will get plenty of playing time leading up to the Sept. 11 regular-season opener against Buffalo.Ryan is a heck of a guy. Hes a hard worker. Hes a pro, Harbaugh said. Its going to be fun to watch him play. As far as a player for us, hes 1-1. Hes .500. Its time for him to win some more games, and hell have a chance to do that for us in the preseason.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
