MIAMI -- Pablo Sandoval credited his recent weight loss for his ability to beat out an infield hit that proved to be a turning point in the game. Sandovals pivotal RBI single started a four-run fourth inning to help lift the San Francisco Giants to a 6-4 win over the Marlins on Saturday night a day after they outslugged Miami 14-10. "Great hustle, it probably won the game for us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It kept the rally going." It would have been the final out of the inning as Logan Morrison raced to the bag, but Sandoval made a head-first slide to beat the Miami first baseman and allow Brandon Belt to score. "It worked, hustle," Sandoval said. "Thats a good rally for us. You have to play like that no matter what situation. Thats the guy that I am, I play hard every day no matter what the situation is." Sandoval has lost 22 pounds in the past six weeks after hiring his older brother, Luis, to be his full-time chef. And when asked if he could have beaten out the play at first prior to his recent transformation, Sandoval responded with an emphatic, "No." Following Sandovals hustle play, Miami pitcher Henderson Alvarez (2-2) then balked home a run and Gregor Blanco tripled, driving in Sandoval and Roger Kieschnick for a 4-0 lead. Center fielder Jake Marisnick made a dive for the ball, but could not get a glove on it. "Jake got aggressive trying to catch that fly ball in centre and didnt catch it and it cost us a couple runs," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. The Marlins cut the deficit to 4-2 on a two-run home run by Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth off of Matt Cain (8-8), who allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. On the pitch prior to Stantons home run, Cain threw a ball that brushed back Stanton, causing him to fall to the ground. After the game Stanton said the pitch hit him on the wrist, but had no way to prove it to home plate umpire David Rackley. Stanton got up and responded with his 14th home run of the season, an estimated 446-foot blast to left-centre field. "Ill take it instead of a hit-by-pitch," Stanton said. Cain wasnt happy with allowing the homer and struck out the next three batters. "I was definitely heated," Cain said. Sandoval drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and Andres Torres hit an RBI single to push the Giants lead to 6-2. "Its always important to get insurance runs," Bochy said. "It gives you a bigger margin of error." Morrison hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Marlins to 6-4. Sergio Romo retired the Marlins in order in the ninth to record his 30th save in 34 chances. "He made some great pitches hitting his spots tonight," Bochy said. "Hes done a very well in that closing role." Alvarez allowed four runs, four hits and four walks while striking out four in seven innings. "Today is a day he just kind of takes it easy. Maybe hell feel better (Sunday). He definitely dodged one there and Im glad hes OK." ... Former Giants pitcher Guillermo Mota received his World Series ring before the game. "Its unbelievable," Mota said. "I just get excited when I see that ring. Its better than the last one." Mota, 40, has aspirations of returning to the Giants next season and believes he has two years left. ... Giants CF Angel Pagan (hamstring) went 0 for 1 for the rookie-level Giants on Friday in his first rehab assignment. "It went fine," Bochy said. "Hes going to go five innings (Saturday), he had a couple of at-bats and had a lot of plays out in the outfield and is moving around well. First game went well for him." ... CLEVELAND -- With Mondays non-waivers trade deadline fast approaching, two teams expected to be active, one as a buyer, one as a seller, will meet Friday night at Progressive Field for the first game of a three-game series. The Oakland As, who have been one of the hotter teams in the league since the All-Star break, will face the Cleveland Indians, who have come stumbling out of the break. The As have won five of their last six games and are 9-4 since the break. The Indians have lost four of their last five games and are 5-6 since the break.Even with their recent surge, the As are still 47-55 and in fourth place in the AL West while the Indians are 57-42 and in first place in the AL Central. However, in the last eight days the Indians have seen their lead in the division shrink from 7 1/2 games to 4 1/2 games. The As were thought to be sellers at the trade deadline, and have a handful of players who might be of interest to a contending team, but as the series in Cleveland begins, the As havent made any significant moves.I know theres some time left, but we havent moved anybody, As manager Bob Melvin told MLB.com. Were playing better baseball and that certainly gives pause for thought. The Indians, on the other hand, have been leading their division since June 3, but still have some needs that they would like to address before Mondays trade deadline. Chief among those needs is bullpen help, specifically a left-hander.For most of this season the Indians have operated with no left-handers in their bullpen. They currently have just one: Kyle Crockett, who is a finesse lefty, who hasnt allowed a run in five appearances in July, but still has a 7.dddddddddddd36 ERA in 16 appearances overall. When hes confident and hitting his spots and working ahead he can do it, said manager Terry Francona. But he doesnt have the luxury of having a 95 mph fastball, which allows you to get away with some mistakes. When he makes his pitches, hes fine.A left-handed reliever is at the top of the Indians trade deadline shopping list, with a catcher being a close second. Catcher Yan Gomes is expected to miss at least another month with a separated shoulder. In Gomes absence backups Chris Gimenez and Roberto Perez have shared the catching duties. In game one of the series Friday night the As starter will be Kendall Graveman, who has been on a roll. Clevelands starter, Trevor Bauer, has struggled in recent starts. In his first nine starts this season, Graveman was 1-6 with a 5.36 ERA. But in 10 starts since then he is 6-0 with a 3.25 ERA. In four July starts he is 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA. In his last start, July 23, he pitched his second career complete game in a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay. In two career starts against Cleveland Graveman is 0-1 with a 2.92 ERA.Bauer has had three rough outings in a row. On July 1 he was 7-2 with a 3.02 ERA. But in three starts since then he is 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA. Fridays start will be Bauer second career appearance vs. the As. On Aug. 2 of last year, a 2-1 Oakland victory in which he pitched 6 2/3 innings, he gave up one run on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. ' ' '
