TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizonas top recruit left to play overseas and its leading scorer may or may not be facing a suspension.Looks like a down year at McKale Center.Not a chance. Not with Sean Miller at the helm.The Wildcats coach never leaves his team bereft of talent and has another stacked team this season. It may take some patience early in the season while Miller figures out what pieces fit where, but expect Arizona to be in the running for the Pac-12 title and an NCAA Tournament berth by the time its over.We have a lot of new players, we have a lot of returning players who wont return to the same role; we have players who will return to a different role, Miller said. So its going to take us some time.Arizona entered last season loaded with expectations, its roster filled with veteran players and talented newcomers. The Wildcats won 25 games, but were upset by Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.Arizona lost some key players from that team -- Gabe York, Kaleb Tarczewski, Ryan Anderson -- but does have a solid returning core.Its unclear if Allonzo Trier, the Wildcats leading returning scorer, will be suspended to start the season, but hes expected to take a big jump in his sophomore season.Swingman Kadeem Allen is back for his senior season, point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright is bigger and stronger, and 7-footer Dusan Ristic has a chance to become one of the Pac-12s best offensive big men. Center Chance Comanche also is expected to have more of an impact with an expected bigger role with this team.Miller signed another stellar recruiting class, but headliner Terrance Ferguson opted to play professionally overseas instead of in Tucson.Even without Ferguson, this is an athletic group, including 7-foot Finnish forward Lauri Markkanen, athletic guards Rawle Alkins and Kobi Simmons.The Wildcats also will have plenty of motivation after such an early exit last season.We had a lot of success, we won 25 games, but we pulled up short, Miller said. All of those who experienced that last season came back hungrier to not do that (again) and try to be better.A few more things to look for from Arizona in 2016-17:TRIERS STATUS: Trier considered a jump to the NBA before deciding to return for his sophomore season. When he starts it is still up in the air. Trier was replaced by Allen at the last minute for Pac-12 media day and Miller would not comment on reports that he will be suspended. An athletic 6-foot-5 guard, Trier was Arizonas third-leading scorer last season at 14.8 points per game and is expected to take more of a leadership role.SMITHS RETURN: Arizona should get a huge lift from a player who was already on the roster. Ray Smith was expected to join Trier in giving Arizona a talented 1-2 freshman punch last season, but he tore his right ACL in preseason practice after tearing his left one as a high school senior. Miller plans to ease Smith into the rotation and possibility limit his minutes early in the season, but the 6-8 forward will likely play a big role in Arizonas success by the end of the year.LAURIS MARK: The most intriguing player on Arizonas roster is Markkanen. He may be a 7-footer, but has the agility and shooting touch of a much smaller player. Markkanen played in numerous international championships for Finland and is projected to be a top NBA draft pick when he leaves Arizona. Until then, he will likely be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams.BIGGER PJC: Of all the players on Arizonas roster, Miller had the most effusive praise for Jackson-Cartwright. The 5-10 point guard learned as the backup to T.J. McConnell as a freshman and picked up valuable experience a year ago as a sophomore. Jackson-Cartwright was one of the hardest-working players during offseason conditioning and has the know-how of a player whos entering his third season under Miller.Hes bigger, hes stronger, Ive never seen him more confident, Miller said. This will mark the beginning of a handful of competitions that will directly impact who qualifies for the Call of Duty World Championship next year. With over 160 teams taking part in the event at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and $100,000 on the line, theres sure to be plenty of action developing over the course of the three-day event. Heres a look at the groups of invited teams competing and which teams are likely to advance.Group A Teams: Team EnVyUs, FaZe Clan, The Gosu CrewFaZe Clan certainly appear motivated to prove that last years lack of success was simply an aberration. Their first-place performance at the PSX Invitational two weeks ago was a nice treat, but the real test will begin in Las Vegas. With fundamental changes implemented to game modes such as Search and Destroy and Hardpoint just a week before the start of the event, it will be interesting to see whether FaZe will be able to repeat their initial success.You could make a case that Team EnVyUs should be projected to take first in the group, and Id be hard-pressed to argue with you. The 2016 World Champions were the best team in Call of Duty for a portion of last season, making doubters, myself included, look foolish throughout their dominant run. With Johnathan John Perez and Jordan Jkap Kaplan still in tow, it would be a surprise to see EnVyUs slip much from their 2016 peak. Fans of Boys in Blue shouldnt be too disappointed with the teams poor placement in a recent 2K Online Final, in which EnVyUs placed 17th-32nd place.Expected to advance: FaZe Clan, Team EnVyUsGroup B Teams: Rise Nation, OpTic Gaming, Team RevengeSay what you will about their World Championship success, but OpTic Gaming are still one of the best teams in Call of Duty until proven otherwise. While OpTic didnt take part in the PSX Invitational, they made sure to remind everyone of their dominance at the 2K Online Final, in which they took first place. Its tough to gauge how solid a team is, considering the tournament was played online, but it seems as if the Green Wall are already on their way to performing to their lofty standards.Rise Nation went through a major makeover in the offseason, importing three players from Team eLevate to join lone holdover Daniel Loony Loza. The new roster put together an uneven performance en route to a third--fourth place finish at the PSX Invitational, most notably playing to and winning the last round in two of their four matches.ddddddddddddAs a result, I wouldnt be surprised if Team Revenge earn a spot in the championship bracket. Adam Killa Sloss new team shouldnt be dismissed, as the roster is built with a mix of battle-tested veterans and young, up-and-coming talent. If Rise Nation can play up to their potential, they should be able to claim the second spot in Group B, but Revenge will be waiting in the wings if they falter.Expected to advance: OpTic Gaming, Rise NationGroup C Teams: Cloud9, Team Kaliber, Echo FoxCloud9s performance at MLG Las Vegas will depend largely on the performance of Andres Lacefield Lacefield and team captain, Patrick Aches Price. If each player is on point, Cloud9 should have no trouble making it through to the championship bracket.This feels like a toss-up regarding the two remaining teams in Group C. Echo Fox finished a respectable ninth-16th place at the 2K Online Final and will have the benefit of playing in group play as opposed to the open bracket, which was their calling card last season. But on the flip side, Team Kaliber boast one of the more unheralded and underrated rosters in North America, with Dylan Theory McGee and Cole ColeChan Chancey leading the charge. Ill lean toward Echo Fox for the moment, but either one of these teams could advance.Expected to advance: Cloud9, Echo FoxGroup D Teams: Luminosity Gaming, Allegiance, compLexity GamingRenato Saints Forza might be the quintessential heat-check player; the lone Luminosity Gaming holdover has put together ridiculous slaying numbers in past iterations of the game. Coupled with a new roster comprised of former Rise Nation members, Luminosity should be able to handle their own in Group D.While not the same caliber of slayer as Saints, compLexitys Christopher Parasite Duarte can certainly hold his own when it comes to slaying and should be able to carry his team through group play. Depending on who advances through the open bracket to qualify for Group D, compLexity seems to match up favorably against their fellow competition and, as a result, should find their way into the championship bracket.Expected to advance: Luminosity Gaming, compLexity Gaming ' ' '
