KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Much like few new what to expect when the first team owned by a United States businessman in 30 years entered Formula One, the Haas F1 Team doesnt really know what to expect at its first home race this weekend.Will the fans cheer more for Haas drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez when they take the green Sunday at The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas?It is another race that we have to go to and do, team owner Gene Haas said Tuesday at the complex that houses his NASCAR Stewart-Haas Racing team and also serves as the U.S. base for Haas F1.Im not sure what to expect actually. ... Im sure the American contingency will welcome us wholeheartedly and we just hope we can do a respectable job.Without a U.S. driver and racing Dallara chassis with engines by Ferrari, this weekend will be a test whether the California businessmans foray into Formula One has resonated with fans in the United Sates.It all comes down to how well we do, Haas said. The worse thing would be to embarrass ourselves as an American team. Maybe we will pull off an Australia where we actually finish top 10; that would be great.Im trying not to have expectations one way or another. You get beat down pretty quick in this business. So if things dont go right, then it was just another race. But if we do phenomenal, were a great team.Grosjean is 13th in the standings but has finished outside the points (top 10) in 12 out of the past 13 races. Gutierrez has yet to have a top-10 finish.Its going to be super exciting to go to Austin, Grosjean said. Its a home race for the team. Its been 30 years [since] we have had an American team on the grid.Its something more unique.Grosjean said he has seen an increase from the United States in his social media. Gutierrez, from Mexico, also could get a boost from Mexican fans at the race.If they will come and cheer us on or not, we dont know, Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner said. We hope so. Its the first time in 30 years an American team in America, a Formula One team. Lets see how that goes down with the fans. Hopefully good.But even getting to this point and knowing they will return to the grid next year would be considered a success by some.The good news is were going to have a second season, Haas said. Its been super successful. ... If we said [at the start] we would have 28 points by midyear, we all would have taken that one.Midyear has been a little tough on us because we havent really scored any more points. But I think we did better than expected at the beginning; we were less than happy with what happened in the midseason, but we have four more races.Haas said he has no regrets spending millions to enter the worlds biggest racing series.This seems like the perfect thing to do, Haas said.
