EDTShareTweetShareShareRavens NFL draft big board: Edge Rusher Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsOutside of wide receiver, edge rusher is probably the Ravens biggest need heading into the draft. Baltimore lost their two leading sack-getters last season in Za’Darius Smith and Terrell Suggs, who combined for 15.5 sacks between the two of them. There was obviously some justification for letting both of them walk but that’s a lot of production to replace, nevertheless. Tim Williams and Tyus Bowser are being counted upon to step into larger roles, but will either of them emerge as a starter opposite Matthew Judon? We’ll have to wait and see. However, the Ravens desperately need to add some talent ad competition into the mix. In terms of outside linebackers and defensive ends, this draft class is talented at the top and fairly deep with guys who can rush the passer. That’s good news for the Ravens and gives them some flexibility. Here are the edge rushers they should have on their radar. 1) Clelin Ferrell, Clemson Brian Burns was a consideration here, but frankly it appears his draft stock has risen to the point where he’s out of the Ravens range. However, there’s still an outside shot that Clelin Ferrell is available for the taking in the first round. If so, it would be a no-brainer selection for Eric DeCosta. Ferell was extremely productive at Clemson and possesses all the tools to be a three-down edge rusher at the next level. 2) Montez Sweat, Mississippi St. Here’s an interesting case. Prior to the recent discovery of an undisclosed heart condition, Montez Sweat was expected to be a top-10 selection. However, his stock has reportedly taken a huge hit and there’s a chance he’ll fall on draft night. If this development plays out, the Ravens might have to roll the dice. Sweat’s upside is as high as almost any player in this draft and if the Ravens can snag him at 22, or even trade back and do so, watch out. 3) Jaylon Ferguson Youth Maxx Williams Jersey , Lousiana TechJaylon Ferguson has as good of a resume as any edge rusher in this class, but concern over competition level may cause him to slip into the second or third round. The Ravens would be wise to pounce if that were to indeed happen. Ferguson broke Terrell Suggs’ FBS sack record in 2018 and has an advanced pass-rushing skill set. He’s also solid against the run, which suggests he can be more than just a situational player. 4) Chase Winovich, Michigan After a strong senior season, Chase Winovich has crept his way onto the late-first, early-second round radar for most teams. Winovich has a high, relentless motor and never takes any plays off. He also possesses good intangibles and leadership qualities, which the Ravens lost at the position with Suggs’ departure. Winovich could be a solid option on day two for Baltimore if they trade back into the second round. 5) Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion Similar to Ferguson, Oshane Ximines did a number on competition at a lower level. The Ravens have shown to value college production when selecting edge rushers and Ximines recorded 27 sacks over the past three seasons. He’s not the most polished prospect in terms of discipline and technique, however, his talent and pass-rushing acumen cannot be ignored. Realistic target for the Ravens in round three. Notable exlusions: D’Andre Walker, Jachai Polite, Christian MillerWhat do you think of these edge rushers and which guys would you like to see the Ravens select this weekend? The one caveat with this game for the Ravens is that Los Angeles only played two starters. Nevertheless, this was an encouraging performance for Baltimore. Below are ten takeaways from this game. 1. The Ravens first-team offense and defense did what they should have doneAs mentioned above, the Rams rested a majority of their starters, while Baltimore did not. The only projected starters missing from action for the Ravens were Marshal Yanda and Tony Jefferson. Baltimore’s first-team offense Stitched Ronnie Stanley Jersey , led by Joe Flacco, orchestrated a methodical 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a Patrick Ricard six-yard touchdown reception. The Ravens offense, as they should have, dominated a second-team defense. Baltimore’s first-team defense also had their way with a second-team Rams offense. They only allowed one first down and recorded two sacks, which included a strip-sack from Terrell Suggs. The Ravens’ defense has been hyped up all offseason, and they did what they should have done: dominated an offense led by backups.2. RB Gus Edwards is stillthe leader in the UDFA clubhouseThe 14-year streak of an undrafted free agent making Baltimore’s 53-man roster is on the line and running back Gus Edwards continues to be the leader of the pack. After a rough week of practice that included two fumbles, he bounced back in a big way on Thursday night. Edwards rushed for 58 yards, but he also had a crucial drop on third down. Regardless, Edwards was again the star of the night for the undrafted free agents. Mark Thompson may have closed the gap as he had an impressive 29-yard reception, but he is still trailing Edwards.3. OLB Tim Williams is slowly earning more repsWilliams’ rookie season was a disappointment as he was a healthy scratch for half of the year. He struggled with the speed of the game, and he showcased how raw of a prospect he truly was. This preseason has been the complete opposite. Williams flashed in the Hall of Fame Game, and he had a dominant performance against the Rams. He was consistently beating his matchup as he recorded one sack. With Tyus Bowser on the sidelines, Williams will likely battle with Za’Darious Smith for snaps. 4. QB Lamar Jackson continues to progress in his developmentNaturally, quarterback Lamar Jackson has been the biggest storyline thus far. In the Hall of Fame Game, he was inconsistent, but against the Rams Youth Ronnie Stanley Jersey , it was far more positive. Jackson delivered several big-time throws, including a 36-yard strike to Chris Moore. Compared to his NFL debut last week, he looked more comfortable in the pocket, while he also displayed his athleticism by rushing for a touchdown. He avoided sacks on several occasions, and with a better offensive line in this matchup than he had in the previous game, he produced. 5. Rookie wide receivers continue to struggleRookie wide receivers Jordan Lasley and Jaleel Scott combined for one reception for nine yards off of five targets, while they each had a drop. Lasley’s drop was far more concerning than Scott’s, but it was still a rough outing for both receivers. Jackson overthrew Scott in the end zone, but other than that, the pair of rookie receivers struggled to create separation.6. LB Kamalei Correa failed to build off of impressive Hall of Fame GameCorrea was coming off of the best performance of his entire NFL career, but he failed to repeat that. He received snaps at both inside and outside linebacker, and he was unable to generate much pressure. Correa’s instincts at the inside linebacker spot are still under question. He is considered to be on the roster bubble, and he did not help his cause.7. Janarion Grant failed to capitalize on ‘golden opportunity’With Tim White out, Grant had a perfect chance to gain ground in the returner competition. He did not have a terrible showing as he did not drop or fumble any of the kicks, but he did not make a signature play either. Grant needed to have a highlight type of return, and he failed to deliver. 8. DL/FB Patrick Ricard continues to prove his worthPatrick Ricard was considered to be a near-lock heading into the preseason, and after two-games Stitched Tim Williams Jersey , it is hard to argue that he is not a lock at this point. Against the Rams, Ricard caught a touchdown pass from Joe Flacco, while he also recorded four total tackles and a quarterback hit. He was consistently in the backfield as it was another successful night for ‘Project Pat.’9. Zach Sieler gained an edge in defensive line position battleSieler is battling with Bronson Kaufusi for what could be the final spot on the defensive line, and he certainly improved his roster stock in this matchup. Sieler recorded two total tackles and one sack. He was excellent at generating pressure along the defensive line. Sieler may have been a seventh-round pick, but he has plenty of potential, and that was on full display on Thursday night. 10. WR Breshad Perriman exploded onto the scenePerriman may have stolen the show at the end of the game with his spectacular 32-yard touchdown. It was against mostly reserves, but it was still a great sign from the former 2015 first-round pick. He struggled throughout his entire career thus far and likely lost confidence, but given his rare speed and measurables, Perriman could always turn the corner if he can consistently catch the ball. Although this was only one game and he still has plenty of work to do, this was an encouraging performance from Perriman. He was targeted four times and did not record a single drop, which is a step in the right direction. His technique and fundamentals looked cleaner and crisper, which is an excellent sign for Baltimore.
